STRUCTURAL INTEGRATION

What is Structural Integration?

Structural Integration  (S.I. also know as ‘Rolfing’),  is a style of body alignment myofascial therapy that helps to organise the body to encourage better posture, ease of movement, reducing stress on the ligaments and abnormal wear and tear on the joint surfaces.

Unlike regular massage, S.I. focusses on the body’s fascial network taking an holistic approach, looking at the entire anatomical structure and it’s biomechanics to help identify and address the cause as well as the effected site of pain and movement restriction.

It is best suited to addressing long term aches and pains and joint restrictions which occur when the fascial tissues become dried, tight, and ‘stuck’.  Many factors can contribute to these fascial adhesions, poor posture, the body’s response to injury, trauma and surgery, or just spending too much time hunched over your desk or phone.

Remaining mobile and pain free is particularly poignant as we age, but many young professional athletes now appreciate the importance of maintaining a healthy fascial system to optimise their sporting performance.

S.I. offers long lasting optimisation of the body’s alignment and movement patterns, where other therapies may only offer short term relief. Post treatment regular exercise such as Pilates and Yoga will help maintain your newfound flexibly, alignment and sense of wellness.

I had a half knee replacement three years ago. A great surgeon, intense physiotherapy and Pilates strengthening resulted in a phenomenal outcome. However, my body had been compensating for the bad knee for so long that even after surgery I was still stuck in my old movement patterns, which was contributing to my back pain.

I have consulted numerous practitioners in search of some longer-term relief but without success.  I am finding that the S.I. treatments with Liane are giving me unexpected relief from the back pain and I am deeply encouraged by positive results to date, as I no longer feel the need for daily pain management medication.

How does S.I work ?

Anatomy Trains Structural Integration is designed to work as a strategic twelve-part treatment protocol, each of the twelve visits targeting a specific anatomical fascial line, or ‘train’.

This methodical twelve-part protocol with ideally 7-10 days between treatments has proven to be an effective recipe with long standing results, but it is essential to complete the full course to achieve the maximum benefits. Those who are time poor may like to consider a 3 Series, which delivers good results, but naturally lacks the detail of a 12 Series of treatments.

Each treatment begins with an assessment, which requires you to be in your under garments, or shorts. Your S.I. Practitioner will apply just the right amount of hands-on pressure to the body in a series of slow, gliding techniques to address a particular anatomical line in conjunction with simple body movements which your practitioner will guide you through. You will regularly be asked to return to standing posture throughout the treatment to assess the progress.

S.I. therapy demands a certain degree of focus and energy from the client, so if you are currently unwell, or pregnant it is advisable to wait until these conditions have passed before starting a course of treatments.
